The Retired Staff Section (RSS) has been developed to provide members with a varied range of informal, social activities in which they can maintain the friendships they made in their working life. Membership is a family matter – husband and wife are covered by the one subscription – and being realistic about retirement – the widows/widowers of some staff find an interest and friendship by continuing to support the activities of RSS.

We now have an established pattern of activities which are generally popular. They include lunches in the Spring, Summer and just before Christmas, an annual Garden party in a member’s garden, coach outings and a Holiday. Thanks to the kindness and encouragement of successive Directors of Research, we have been able to hold some of our events on official premises at Martlesham. We also publish a Newsletter periodically, and an Events List, which keeps us all informed of the social programme. The Newsletter is especially interesting to those who now live too far away to join in the social life as it contains articles of interest written by the members and reports on the social events.

The main activities are naturally centred on the Martlesham Area but there is a London Branch of the RSS which looks after those who remain around London. The London Branch committee arranges some meetings in the London Area which are advertised in the Newsletter and open to all members of RSS.

Little of what we have achieved would have been possible without the encouragement and support of ATLAS. RSS is a fully constituted section of ATLAS and is allowed to fix its own subscription. All of our events are designed to run on a break-even basis which allows the membership fee to be kept as low as possible.
