“Technologies and devices that interact directly with the brain are being developed to help treat diseases such as stroke, dementia, obesity and depression.

But they are also being developed for military and computer gaming applications.

What are these technologies? How do they work, and what might be the social and ethical implication of intervening in the brain?”

This month our guest speaker Mr Hugh Whittall, Director of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics

will be speaking on the subject above, come in and join us for discussion of this fascinating subject.

First buses will be in the Hub on Wednesday 2 May to re-promote their weekly and monthly discounted bus tickets, as well as answering questions on their service.

Members of The Adastral Park Sailing Club will be available at lunchtime in the Hub on Thursday 3 May.

On Saturday 23 June we are once again opening the gates from 11:00 – 17:00, for the family day.

Tickets are free but, following the success of last year’s charity event, we are asking for a minimum donation of £1 per ticket with all proceeds going to Child Line, all attractions are free and there’ll be something for everyone.

Some of the treats we have lined up this year include a funfair, samba band, climbing walls, inflatables, mountain bike display, stunt plane, fire engine rides and much, much more. We are also running an Adastral World Record events which will take place outside the Hub. If you have any suggestions or challenging ideas you would like to arrange, then please e-mail atadastral.

You can have a maximum of six tickets (that includes babies and one for you) and your guests must be accompanied by you on the day.

You must collect your tickets during the week 11-15 June 12:00-13:30 from the Hub (if you’re based in Bibb Way we’ll contact you separately).

If you aren’t around that week, please arrange for a colleague to collect them for you. There will be no alternative dates or arrangements so please ensure you get them one way or another that week.

As always we are looking for volunteers to act as stewards, so if you would like to get involved for an hour or so on the day, please contact Adele Wyse if you can help.

We’re really excited about this year’s event so we’re looking forward to seeing you there.

The Adastral Park Diversity Steering Group is hosting a Dementia Awareness Day on Wednesday 23 May.

The question time event will be held on Wed 23 May, in the Alan Rudge Theatre from 14:00-16:00, and is open to all colleagues in Adastral Park and Bibb Way. If you want to attend the event and/or have specific questions you want addressed by the experts please register your question and your intention to attend here. Our lunchtime informal ‘walks on the wildside’ will this month re-do the tour around the inside of Adastral Park fence, past the pond, through the nature trail, by the dishes and back via B1, our oldest (and apparently haunted) building on site.

We shall be stepping out on Wed 18 April, leaving from the pond in front of Adhara at 12:15.
This walk is approx 1.5 miles long and should take under an hour to complete.
Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather.

We are also organising a walking ghost tour round Ipswich on the evening of Thur 19 April, starting from the Tourist Information Centre, St Stephens Lane, Ipswich at 8pm which will take around two hours. Cost is £5 per person, children welcome. Contact Andrew Cassy for further details though you can just turn up on the night.

The Suffolk Police Community Officer will be in the Hub at lunchtime on Thursday 19 April.

Now is your chance to sense the flavour of twinning through an easy introduction of being a host, or just joining in the social activities – including a meeting with the Ipswich Mayor and taking part in the Jubilee celebrations in Bury St Edmunds.

Nearly all our guests speak good English so your German speaking capabilities can be nil. The Germans are always very keen to visit us. Check the Adastral Park Twinning Association (APTA) website for details of previous visits. Email Tony Gould or contact the other committee members with any further enquires.

NB. In August we shall be visiting our friends in Amiens in the Picardy region of Northern France over the Bank Holiday weekend. So if you have never participated before you can be sure of a very friendly warm experience. For further details email Tony Gould.

Details on the above and many other exhange opportunities including OSCAR, the UK’s largest international triathlon event at Blenheim Palace in June, language classes or ballooning, skiing and other activities see the recent APTA_Newsletter_2012_March.

Prospect will be in the Hub on Tuesday 10 April at lunchtime.

The Book People will be in the Hub at lunchtime on Wednesday 11 April.
