The BT Labs at Adastral Park near Ipswich, Suffolk, today celebrated 40 years at the forefront of telecoms innovation, commemorating the opening of the company’s global R&D headquarters in November 1975 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The site, formerly known as the Post Office Research Station Martlesham Heath, was opened on 21 November 1975, as a new centre for telecommunications research, replacing the wartime Dollis Hill research station in North London.

Speaking in front of people, even when speaking about a much loved place such as Felixstowe, can be nerve wracking. At Speakers of Felixstowe a warm reception awaits new and rusty speakers who want to improve their skills. Experienced orators are also encouraged to come and share their tips to help others develop this vital employability and social skill and to enter the Association of Speaker Clubs contests.
Their last meeting was competition night which saw one of their long term members move onto the area speech contest with an interesting and informative talk on growing and eating chilli peppers. This means a speech demonstrating clear structure and topic knowledge, delivered clearly with good vocal variety, and enhanced by appropriate body language.
Speakers of Felixstowe is a members only club, open to anyone at Adastral Park, and your first taster session is free. Their next meet is on Thursday 27 March at 7.45 pm at The Marlborough Hotel, Sea Road, Felixstowe, IP11 2BJ. The Martlesham Heath Control Tower Museum will be re-opening for the Summer Season on Sunday 6 April, from 14:00 to 17:00 on this Sunday, and on every Sunday to the end of October.
Learn the story of this fascinating and unique airfield from its early days in 1917… to the last aircraft to fly from Martlesham Heath in 1979.
Admission is FREE, but donations are appreciated. Find us at the rear of Parkers Place, off Eagle Way, Martlesham Heath IP5 3UX. Parking is easy and free.
Quintiles will again be undertaking free health checks and cholesterol tests on behalf of the NHS for people based at Adastral Park between 25-27 March in Conference Room 1, Antares Building, subject to the following conditions;
- You’re aged 40-74 (inclusive)
- You’re registered with a GP based in Suffolk or are a resident in Suffolk
- You’ve not had an NHS Health Check within the last 5 years
- You’re not being treated for cardio vascular disease, diabetes, renal dysfunction, hypertension and not currently taking medication for high cholesterol.
The health check is a quick and simple review of core risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes, renal disease, stroke and heart disease and includes:
- questions about health and family history
- measurement of height and weight = BMI
- instant cholesterol
- blood pressure & heart rate
- opportunity to ask any related health questions
- practical advice for the future
Each health check takes approximately 20 minutes. Attendees are given a copy of their results and anonymous data is forwarded to Public Health Suffolk County Council at the end of the clinic for evaluation purposes.

The 1st Martlesham Scout Group for the last few years has linked with some of the Ipswich groups as well as Kesgrave to provide a Christmas card delivery service to residents in postcode areas IP1-IP5 & IP12. Over the years new groups and villages have been incorporated into the main sort, these now include Claydon, Barham, Grundisburgh, Tuddenham, Henley, Westerfield, Balham, Bramford, Great and Little Bealings and Culpho. Please don’t try to send cards to other parts of the country and abroad as they simply will not get sent!
For 2013 the price per card is 22p and all money is split between all the Scout groups on a 50/50 split. The exception to this is where cards are placed in boxes for the relevant area that is responsible for them, that group keeps the 22p. For example: if you write cards for friends in Martlesham the all the money from those cards stays with Martlesham scouts.
We take cards of any size for the 22p price and all we ask is that they are correctly addressed, if possible include the postcode as, if we can’t find an address we can use the postcode to trace it. Likewise if an address is not quite readable then we can also attempt to trace it using the postcode. Please could you also leave your contact details with your cards and money? This is just in case you inadvertently put cards in we cannot deliver. These will be returned via Stuart Cooke, 01473 608479.
The Scout post box will be located in the Hub between 25 November to 10 December. Cards will be delivered by 24 December.

Taking onboard comments from previous years we are looking to improve the menu choices for those wishing to eat during the evening.
The Food Court will be open from 4.30pm onwards and is suggesting to service a wider range of foods to cater for most tastes, including a greater range of healthy options.
Pizza and Pasta will be served from the World Marche counter (provisional menu choice below). Soups, jacket potatoes and salad available from the Wild Greens bar.

The BT Accessibility Practice will be hosting an accessibility event on Wednesday 16 October. They will be raising awareness of accessibility solutions to those in Adastral Park, the support available to disabled BT employees and customers and empowering BT people to deal with accessibility and inclusion in their own workplace.
The Suffolk Police Community Support Officers will be in the Hub at lunchtime on Thursday 17 October.
