“Power/thermal side and covert channels can be used to hack password and sensitive information, and secretly leak it to an external device. Imagine that you have a phone or a peripheral device with an encryption program. The program execution leads to a specific thermal/power consumption profile. A hacker can exploit this profile to inference the password used in the encryption by analysing the thermal/power consumption profile.
This talk will cover attack and defence mechanisms that we have recently explored and are published at top venues. It will focus on the mechanisms mainly relevant to thermal covert channels. The mechanisms will demonstrate ways to attack edge devices, detection and defence strategies to encounter such attacks. Our evaluations have shown promising results in terms of detection accuracy and defence achieved.
Finally, it will also brief other ongoing side and covert channel activities within the research group.”
