Prof
Les Baillie leads the award winning
Pharmabees project based in Cardiff university. The project is centred around the importance of biodiversity and the impact that climate change is having on our lives. It aims to inspire children of all ages from deprived backgrounds through the delivery of innovative educational digital and real world resources. We have engaged with over 4000 school aged students across South Wales and have received positive feedback from teachers and parents on the impact of our program on aspiration.
We have developed a range of bilingual educational resources which are free to use and can be accessed from
our website. These resources included, a video created with the help of year 6 students called
what is a scientist which has been viewed over 230,000 times. They also include innovative digital educational resources such as
Spotabee a digital citizen science bio survey tool for bees, and a
Minecraft bee world developed in partnership with Ysgol Pen Rhos which allows students to study the impact of climate change on bees.
We have also supported the development of the
Climate Classroom project in partnership with Bee1. The package consist of a combination of digital lessons and hands on activities includes a classroom activity in which the students are provided with Spirulina, a form of microalgae, which captures atmospheric carbon. Schools are provided with a simple kit which allows them to grow these harmless algae in the classroom and engage in conversations around photosynthesis and climate change.
We are also in the process of developing new digital tools in partnership with the National Museum of Wales which will employ VR and AI to allow users to
explore the complex biology of bees.
In addition to our work inspiring the next generation of children we are also involved in a number of
community projects which encourage individual to engage in nature in a way which supports their mental health.
