Sizewell C will be a 3.2-gigawatt nuclear power station generating low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes. It will be a close copy of Hinkley Point C which is already under construction in Somerset. Both power stations will play a key role in the UK's target of reaching Net Zero and replacing fossil fuels with homegrown low carbon electricity. Nuclear has been part of life in East Suffolk ever since Sizewell A was built in the 1960s. Sizewell B is producing clean power for millions of homes today and Sizewell C will begin another chapter of safe nuclear generation in the region. The new power station will deliver at least 60 years of low carbon energy for 6million homes along with lasting economic benefits to the local economy.
Reliable baseload nuclear power from Sizewell C will help build a resilient clean energy system and lower costs for households and businesses.
As a generator of low-carbon electricity and heat, Sizewell C can help kickstart other Net Zero technologies such as Hydrogen production and Direct Air Capture. By using an electrolyser we will harness some of the clean heat made during nuclear generation to make Hydrogen. We plan to use Hydrogen for our fleet of buses to transport our workers to site. Sizewell C is also part of a consortium which has been awarded Government funding to carry out a design study on powering Direct Air Capture using heat. This pilot project has received planning permission and will be built at the ABP Port of Lowestoft for a two year trial. In the long run, DAC technology linked to the power station could allow Sizewell C to become carbon negative.
